Glossary of Roulette Terms
Our Online Roulette Glossary That Can Help You Learn Something More About Online Roulette
This roulette glossary will be very useful if you don’t know how different types of bets are called in roulette, as well as other important terms that you have to know when playing roulette.
American Roulette – A roulette variation with one additional pocket numbered ‘00’ and colored in green. Naturally, with the addition of the double zero pocket this variation has a worse house edge, which is why many people avoid playing it.
Choppy Game – A game in which nobody is ahead of no one with winning bets i.e. everybody wins and loses in the same proportion.
Cold Game – A game in which the players are on losing streaks and the house wins most of the time.
Column Bet – Column bet is similar to the ‘Dozen bet’ (see below) only that here the numbers in a column are not in the same order as in a dozen bet.
Corner Bet – Also called ‘carré’ in French, a corner bet is when you put your chips on the corner in which four different numbers intersect. Try this with any roulette game in free-play in order to see how you can place a corner bet.
Croupier – The person employed by the casino to host the roulette game similar to a dealer in a card game.
Dozen Bet – Since the roulette wheel has 36 numbers, each of them are divided into 3 groups of 12 numbers. For example, one group contains numbers from 1 to 12, the second has numbers from 13 to 24, and the third group has the numbers from 25 to 36. When you make a column bet you bet that the roulette ball will fall on at least one of the numbers from the group.
En Prison – This rule can be found in American and European roulette. It is activated if your ball falls in the ‘0’ or ‘00’ pockets, but your bet has to be high/low, red/black or even/odd, and you are given a second chance to play the bet without betting some more money. This rule is not offered in many online casinos, but some of them do.
European Roulette – The more advantageous roulette variation without the ‘00’ pocket because of which its house edge is significantly lower.
Hot Game – A game in which the players are on a winning streak and are beating the house most of the time.
High Bet – This is one of the lowest paying bets. A High Bet is a bet made on a group of numbers from 19 to 36.
Inside Bet – Inside bets are the highest paying bets in roulette, but they are also the hardest bets. An inside bet is a bet made on a specific number. They are called inside bets because they can be found on the inside of the roulette betting layout.
Low Bet – Similar to a High Bet only the here you make a bet on a group of numbers from 1 to 18. See ‘High Bet’.
Outside Bet – Outside bets are paid 1 to 1. They can be high/low, even/odd or black/red. They are also called ‘even-money bets’. The reason why they are called outside bets is similar to those of inside bets. It is because they can be found on the outside of the roulette betting layout.
Straight Bet – Straight bet is the name by which bets on specific numbers are called. This bet pays 35 to 1. This is one of the best ways to win big in roulette.
Street Bet – If you place a bet on three numbers at once, you are making a street bet.
